To use wireless internet access in the
Goodnow Library:
- You need a laptop or other device with a wireless
network interface card (NIC). The Library’s technology supports 802.11g
and 802.11b
- Wireless Internet access is available throughout the
building; however, the signal may be stronger in some places than in others
- You must be familiar with your own device and how to
connect to wireless access. Library staff cannot provide technical support
- Wireless users agree to abide by the Library’s
Internet Use Policy, which prohibits illegal or abusive use
- Wireless access may not be secure; the Library cannot
guarantee the safety of your data
- Many tables and carrels allow you to plug in your
power supply, but you may want to have a well-charged battery for greater
flexibility
- Out of consideration for others using the same
bandwidth, please do not download large files
- Bring headphones if you plan to use audio files
- Wireless printing (black & white) is available at a
cost of 5¢ per page. Installing the printer driver takes about 5 minutes.
Reference staff can provide you with a CD-ROM and instructions. The
wireless printer is found at the Reference Desk
If your laptop doesn't have a wireless card:
- There are several sockets that you can plug into on the 2nd floor of the
library. The reference staff will be happy to point them out to you.
- The reference desk also has a limited number of cables available.
Printing:
- Printing is available at 5 cents/page.
- Ask at the reference desk for instructions.
Having trouble connecting?
- Goodnow Library’s wireless access does not require
passwords or other security measures. If your usual wireless access uses
wireless equivalent privacy (WEP) or other security, you may have to
override that security precaution to allow your device to connect to an
insecure network
- If your device is set up to access a specific network
only, you may need to change some settings. Ask at the Reference Desk for
suggested instructions
- If all else fails, contact someone who knows your
hardware and software: IT staff at work; another family member; or support
staff for your hardware or software. Library staff cannot provide technical
support
